Aeroflot will become the owner in the southern terminals of Sheremetyevo

Published

on

Aeroflot and Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport signed an agreement on strategic partnership. It provides for the transfer of all terminals of the southern block – Sheremetyevo-2 (F), E and Sheremetyevo-3 (D) – for the flights of Aeroflot, its subsidiaries and partners in the Sky Team alliance. Other carriers flying there, Transaero and some foreign companies, are likely to be offered uncomfortable northern terminals. In addition, Sheremetyevo-2 (F) will be given for domestic flights of Aeroflot and its subsidiaries Russia, Donavia, Orenair and Vladivostok Air, as well as, probably, Nordavia. .

The agreement means the victory of Aeroflot in the hardware war with Sheremetyevo and the actual transfer of the airport to the control of the national carrier. For passengers this will bring, on the one hand, better conditions on domestic flights, since those in the tight internal sector built by Aeroflot itself Sheremetyevo-3 (D) do not stand up to criticism. On the other hand, Aeroflot's competitors may have serious problems – it is possible, that they may be denied access to Sheremetyevo or offer either inconvenient for transport access to northern terminals, or a transfer to Vnukovo.

Earlier the airport offered "Aeroflot" other ways to solve the problem of overcrowding in the domestic sector – to expand Terminal 3 (D) further to the west or to redistribute part of the landings from international flights to domestic Russian ones. According to experts, the transfer of domestic flights to the old Sheremetyevo-2 (F) will create a number of difficulties. One of them is the lack of a modern baggage system in this terminal, which prevents the cargo from being shipped from domestic flights to international ones and vice versa, which will increase the connection time at the airport primarily for passengers of Aeroflot itself.
